Selectively and imaginatively revisiting old master techniques and concepts, artists today are again exploring the figurative tradition as a viable way of approaching contemporary life. Some define themselves as realists and/or classicists; many acknowledge the formal lessons of a century of modernist experimentation. This section of our site presents reviews of gallery shows featuring painters working in the representational idiom, related books and museum exhibitions, in-depth articles on artists, and links to galleries and artists’ Websites. We also spotlight educational institutions that offer fine arts programs committed to formal excellence, craftsmanship and recognizable subject matter. The current revival is part of a broader movement seeking a return to Beauty in both society and the arts. In this context question facing artists today is not just how to paint, but what to paint. We hope to foster the search for a communal iconography.
