Tompkins Square

Poem by Terese Coe

The sweep of elms’

calligraphy

is read

against the sky

where boughs of lithe

parabolas

spill out

their earthy dye

and everywhere

the chaos of

unmeaning

breathing back,

uncurling green

samaras,

the abeyance

of the black.
